INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO INSERT ROMAN AND
ARABIC PAGE NUMBERS IN A DOCUMENT (BY USING A TEMPLATE).
This
guide intends to provide instructions on how to insert roman and Arabic numbers
in an already written document by using an already page-broken template. I
suggest you go through all the pages of this guide before you begin formatting
your document. After that, you can begin following this guide step by step. Follow this link to download the Template Roman And Arabic Numbers Insertion Template
NB:
§ The
word Preliminaries/Preliminary
pages as used in the Roman And Arabic Numbers Insertion Template refers to
all the pages that deserve receiving a different numbering style (mostly Roman numbers are used) from the main contents of a
document. They include Certification,
Declaration, Acknowledgement, Dedication, Abstract, Table of Contents, Lists (Of Tables, Figures, Abbreviations etc).
After the Preliminaries,
the other following pages/Real content (e.g Introduction, Problem Statement, Literature
Review, Methodology,
Results and Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation, References/Bibliography, Appendices) usually require
another numbering style( usually Arabic numerals are
used).
§ You
Shouldn’t waste your time Typing the list of tables & figures and
References/Bibliography.
Follow this link to know how to auto-generate the list of References/Bibliography

§ The
same goes to Table of Contents. MS Office will do that for us. So, Telling you
that the table of contents is part of the preliminaries doesn’t mean you have
to type it manually.
§ To
make things easy, all the TITLES HIGHLIGHTED IN RED in the template require manual insertion/typing (e.g ,[Certification, Declaration, Acknowledgement, Dedication, Abstract and List of Abbreviations] for the
preliminaries and [Introduction,
Problem Statement, Literature Review, Methodology, Results and Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation
& Appendices] for the
Real Content)
and all those TITLES HIGHLIGHTED IN GREEN are AUTO-GENERATED.(e.g [Table of Contents, Lists Of Tables & Figures]
for the Preliminaries and [References/Bibliography]
for the real content)
§ The
Office Properties used in the template are
v Line
Spacing-1.15
v Font-Times
New Roman
v Font
Size-12
v Page
Layout Spacing-Before-0, After-0
PART I: DEALING WITH THE
PRELIMINARY PAGES
Steps
In
case you don’t want to use the cover page I have used in this template,
Removing the cover page is done by following the steps below;
Ø Place
the cursor to the left most side of the asterisk/star (highlighted in red) * at the upper leftmost part of page
(i).
Ø Go
to Insert>Cover Page
Ø Remove
current cover page.
To
Insert the Cover Page You desire,
Ø Place
the cursor to the left most side of the asterisk/star (highlighted in red) * at the upper leftmost part of page
(i).
Ø Go
to Insert>Cover Page
Ø Select
the Cover Page you want to use from the given templates or click at “more cover
pages from office.com to get more cover pages.
Ø The
cover page will insert itself just before this page (i.e page i).
NB:
§ The
Insert cover page inserts a page break on its own. So, there is no need to
perform the insert page break at this stage.
§ Your
initial doc shouldn’t have a cover page with it per my tutorial. This sample
doc has a cover page because one may just need to use this template and
complete his writing chores by just adding and deleting text from it.
§ It’s
also important to know that I am using the 2013 version of MS Office. So for
those of you who might be using older or newer versions of MS Office, kindly
see how you can associate these tricks with your version. I haven’t seen some
crucial/impending discrepancies with 2010/2007 versions, I hope the same will
go to later versions.
The
preliminary pages i.e Certification, Abstract, Acknowledgement, Acronyms, Table
of Contents etc can be filled starting from the the asterisk/star (highlighted
in red) *.
To
add the Preliminary pages in this template,
Ø Open
your document containing the text you want to format
Ø select
your preliminary content from your document,
Ø Copy
it.
Ø Come
back to this Roman And Arabic Numbers Insertion Template
Ø Place
the cursor to the left most side of the asterisk/star (highlighted in red) *.
Ø Paste
your content here.
Ø Space
your New Text per your desires, i.e The preliminary pages i.e Certification,
Abstract, Acknowledgement, Acronyms, Table of Contents to be on separate pages.
NB: At this stage, we
expect every separate preliminary page to have its own corresponding roman
number.
At
this juncture, you may delete all the unwanted text (I mean my instructions)
from the preliminaries.
If
you would want to go as far as auto-generating some contents from your
document, you should then NOT delete the pages having the green highlighted
titles e.g TABLE CONTENTS
,LIST OF TABLES, LIST OF FIGURES. The reason I
am doing this is to
§ Avoid
disturbing/breaking the page break that comes after the aforementioned pages.
§ Create
a room for inserting an auto-generated table of contents and lists of Tables
& Figures (This will of course be done after writing/pasting the real
contents starting from the #START OF THE REAL CONTENT on page 1).
PART II: DEALING WITH THE
REAL CONTENT
The
real content/ post preliminary pages e.g Introduction, Literature Review,
Methodology, Findings, Conclusion & Recommendation, Bibliography/References,
Appendix etc can be filled/inserted starting from the Hash/Number sign
(highlighted in blue) #. In page (1) from the template.
To
add the post preliminary pages/real content in the template,
Ø Open
your document containing the text you want to format
Ø select
your post preliminary pages/real content from your document,
Ø Copy
it.
Ø Come
back to the Roman And Arabic Numbers Insertion Template
Ø Place
the cursor to the left most side of the Hash/Number sign (highlighted in blue)# In page (1) from the template.
Ø Paste
your content there.
Ø Space
your New Text per your desires, i.e “The post preliminary pages/real content
e.g Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Findings, Conclusion &
Recommendation, Bibliography/References, Appendix etc” to be on separate pages.
NB: At this stage, we
expect every separate The post preliminary pages/real content to have its own
corresponding arabic number.
At
this juncture, you may delete all the unwanted text (I mean my instructions)
from the Section of the Real Content.
If
you would want to go as far as auto-generating some contents from your
document, you should then NOT delete the page having the green highlighted
titles in the Section of the Real Contents, e.g REFERENCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY. The reason I am doing this
is to
§ Create
a room for you to insert an auto-generated list of References/Bibliography
NB:
Ø After
auto-generation of any content (be it Table of contents, list of Tables &
Figures and References) a new tittle corresponding to what you were
auto-generating does appear, in this case, my titles should be removed after
the auto-generation exercise.
